Capoeira Camara Malaysia

Capoeira Camara was founded by Mestre Bola (Marinaldo Da Silva) in 2005 and reached the shores Malaysia five years later. To date, Capoeira Camara can be found in Canada, Bermuda, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Under the watchful eyes of Mestre Bola, these schools are led by dedicated teachers who are qualified by the Master himself. Camara means comrade or camaraderie, and besides having 'grown up' in Capoeira together, these frontliners welcome newcomers into the circle of friendship with open arms.

The Malaysian branch, since 2010, has been active around the country teaching at orphanages, carrying out workshops, performing in road shows, television and radio appearances, among others. Although not a 'new thing', many Malaysians are still unaware of Capoeira or what it is. Tirelessly, Capoeira Camara Malaysia will continue to reach out, educate and share this beautiful fight-dance artform with them.

At Caboco, Camara students are allowed to crawl as long as they need to before they can walk, run, jump and maybe magically fly, because basics are of the utmost importance here. Although each student progresses at his/her own pace, comrades of different belt rankings push each other to get better together in an encouraging and positive atmosphere.

Capoeira teaches not only fancy mind-boggling moves but also discipline, respect and humbleness. It is self expression, the freedom to be yourself and accepting others' quirkiness as they accept yours. Yes, we are pretty quirky. Keep your minds sharp, too by learning Portuguese. We also play music instruments and sing. Even if you're tone deaf, it's still so much fun to just make noise.

He began training with a top Capoeira Master in 1988. At the age of 15 he began training in percussion and theatre with master teachers in Recife. At this time Mestre Bola played with many well known bands and had the chance to tour throughout the North East of Brazil, and Europe.

Initially, in 1995 Mestre Bola moved to Vancouver, Canada where he continued to work in capoeira and music, teaching numerous workshops throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe, but then relocated to Toronto in 2000 to open an academy. In 2005 he found Capoeira Camará, which now includes academies in Canada (Toronto, Peterborough, Montreal, Quebec and Calgary), Bermuda, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Ireland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Beyond his teaching duties in Toronto, Mestre Bola participates in numerous Capoeira events all over the world. He is also an accomplished musician and is responsible for producing five successful annual Batizado e Troca da Corda shows. Overall, Mestre Bola has been promoting Brazilian culture and Capoeira for 26 years. His travels have taken him to training sessions and performances in St. Croix and to Capoeira workshops as far away as Russia.

In addition to his capoeira achievements Mestre Bola has worked in producing shows with Cirque du Solei and Dance Migration. Currently he is the artistic director of the largest Brazilian festival in Canada called Folklorama which happens every summer.
